Vietnam Tip Calculator: How Much to Tip in Dong

Tipping isn’t required here. Counting the zeros is the hard part.

Updated:

A 300,000 VND dinner bill looks like a fortune until you realize it’s about $11. Tipping in Vietnam is optional, 5–10% already counts as generous, and on a bill like that a 30,000 VND tip (about $1.14) is plenty. Enter your bill below, and the calculator shows the tip in dong, in your own currency and in the exact notes to hand over.

How to Use the Vietnam Tip Calculator

  1. Enter the bill in dong. Shortcuts work: 300k, 1.2m, or the Vietnamese format with dots, 300.000.
  2. Pick a tip. Tap 10%, 15%, 20% or 25%, or type your own percentage.
  3. Split and round. Add people if you’re sharing the bill. Turn on “Round the tip for cash,” and each person’s tip goes up to the nearest 5,000 VND, so you can pay in notes without asking for change.

You’ll see the tip and the total in dong, an approximate amount in USD, EUR, RUB, CNY, AUD or TWD, and the banknotes that add up to the tip. Open “Compare all currencies” to see all six at once, and “Vietnamese banknotes” to see what each note looks like.

How Much to Tip in Vietnam

Locals rarely tip, and nobody will chase you for skipping it. In tourist areas, though, a small tip for good service is common and always welcome. These are the amounts that work in practice:

Service Typical tip About in USD
Street food and local eateries Not expected. Round up or leave 10,000–20,000 VND $0.38–0.76
Mid-range and tourist restaurants 5–10% if the bill has no service charge Depends on the bill
Restaurants with a service charge Nothing extra needed; 20,000–50,000 VND for great service $0.76–1.91
Cafes and bars Not expected. Leave the small change Under $1
Spa and massage 50,000–100,000 VND, or about 10% $1.91–3.82
Hotel housekeeping 20,000–50,000 VND per night $0.76–1.91
Hotel porter 20,000–50,000 VND per trip $0.76–1.91
Group tour guide 50,000–100,000 VND per person per day $1.91–3.82
Private tour guide 100,000–200,000 VND per person per day $3.82–7.63
Private driver 50,000–100,000 VND per day $1.91–3.82
Grab and taxis Not expected. Round up or tip in the Grab app Under $1
Hairdresser or barber 20,000–50,000 VND $0.76–1.91

USD amounts use the 2026 average rate of about 26,200 VND per dollar.

Is Tipping Expected in Vietnam?

No. Service workers here earn a wage that doesn’t depend on tips, and tipping isn’t part of everyday Vietnamese culture. It’s still welcome, especially in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Da Nang and Nha Trang, where many guides, spa therapists and hotel staff work mostly with foreigners.

Tipping isn’t rude. Hand the money over discreetly, with your right hand or both hands, and say “cảm ơn” (thank you). Some spas give you a tip envelope or a rating card at the end of a treatment. The amount is still your choice.

Check the Bill for a Service Charge

Many mid-range and upscale restaurants in tourist areas add a service charge, usually 5%, plus VAT. Look for “SVC,” “Service charge” or “Phí phục vụ” on the bill. If it’s there, an extra tip is optional, and leaving the small change is enough.

Tip in Dong, Not Dollars

A dollar tip means the person has to change it, usually at a worse rate, and small or worn US bills are often refused at exchange counters. Dong is what everyone actually spends. Coins aren’t used in daily life, so round up to the nearest thousand and keep 10,000 and 20,000 VND notes for tips.

Vietnamese Banknotes: Colors and Values

Every note from 10,000 VND up is made of plastic polymer, shows Ho Chi Minh on the front and has a clear window on the right. The color is the fastest way to tell them apart:

The 1,000, 2,000 and 5,000 VND notes are smaller paper notes. You’ll mostly get them as change at markets and street stalls.

Most tipping mistakes in Vietnam come from mixing up notes, not from the percentage. Two pairs look alike, especially in a dim restaurant:

  • 20,000 and 500,000 VND. One is blue, the other blue-green. Hand over the wrong one and your tip jumps from about $0.76 to about $19.
  • 10,000 and 200,000 VND. Both are orange-brown, and the difference is roughly $0.38 versus $7.63.

Keep the big notes in a separate pocket and count the zeros before you hand anything over. The calculator’s “Tip in cash” block shows exactly which notes make up the tip.

Exchange Rates Used in the Calculator

The calculator converts dong at average rates for 2026. They’re for orientation; banks and exchange counters set their own.
